2017 $ Topps $ Transcendent $ Baseball $ Sketches $ Seem $ Neat $

2017 Topps Transcendent Baseball cards come with what I think is a very cool idea of an item you can get: game used baseballs that an artist has drawn a MLB player's portrait on. Art on a baseball is a cool idea in general, but I think the authentication addition to these and potentially being able to track what game they are from makes them extra cool; if that is the case.

Of course, there are only 87 boxes of this porduct being produced and you, uh, gotta be rich to buy one, so, yeah, neat, bummer.

Topps Transcendent Collection Baseball - THE PINNACLE OF HIGH-END COLLECTING - re-emerges in 2017 with 87 limited edition boxes.

Inspired by 1987 Topps Baseball, each hand-crafted wooden box will deliver an astounding number of premium collectibles.

- 1 Complete Set of Transcendent MLB Moments Sketch Card Reproductions
- 50 Transcendent Collection Autograph Cards

The Baseball Player Who Died Fighting North Korea

Bob Neighbors only played in seven MLB games, but in that span of time he grabbed two hits in eleven at bats including a home run at Fenway park.

Robert Otis Neighbors, born in Oklahoma in 1917, signed up to play some professional baseball in 1936.  His journey through the system landed him in those seven major league games in 1939 as a member of the St. Louis Browns.

In 1941 Neighbors suffered through the tragedy of losing his wife in a car accident.  It is said that he never really forgave himself for traveling on the road as a baseball player instead of being with her.  By 1942 he quit baseball and joined up with the United States Air Force.

He would later remarry and even played some more baseball, though a return to the sport in a professional capacity did not occur.

In 1952 Bob Neighbors took to the skies in the Korean War as a Douglas Invader pilot.  On August 8th of 1952, Bob and his crew would fly off on a night mission never to be seen again.  They reported that their craft …

Book Spotlight: The Card by Michael O'Keeffe and Teri Thompson

When it comes to baseball card collectors and reading, the first book I always think of it The Card.
If you are in the hobby of collecting trading cards this is a read that not only gives you some history, but might influence your opinions on certain hobby aspects like grading.

At the center of this book is the story of what is probably the most infamous and valuable baseball card ever: the T206 Honus Wagner aka The Holy Grail of Baseball Cards. Specifically, this tells you about the most famous version of the card ever sold and the sordid history behind how it was handled.

What is a Dodger? Where Did the Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball Team Get Their Name?

What is a Dodger? When it comes to the Los Angeles Dodgers MLB baseball team, fans of the sport, whether a Dodger fan or not, may think the answer to this is common knowledge. However, as the Dodgers of 2017 play on the "grand stage" more eyes than regular fans are upon them and there may be some curiosity. I'll keep this short.

The Dodger franchise began in New York, specifically they were formed as the Brooklyn Grays in 1883. They eventually picked up the nickname "The Bridegrooms," and other assorted nicknames, but the one that ended up sticking was the "Trolley Dodgers."

The nickname Trolley Dodgers is said to stem from the dangers inherent to pedestrians in Brooklyn at the time in regards to trolley cars as a mode of transportation taking up the streets.  One might need to dodge a trolley should they not wish to get run over by it.

Eventually the team adopted this nickname as the official team name, shortening it to Dodgers, and thus, the Los Ang…

2017 World Series Game 2: Dodgers Vs Astros Vs Conspiracy Theory

2017 World Series Game 2: Dodgers Vs Astros:

It was an entertaining game, mainly because I was rooting for the Astros and they got the win. I see a lot of online applause for the game and how exciting it all was, etc.. There were a lot of HRs hit and in fact a record was set for the amount of HRs hit in extra innings I think I read.

As exciting as I agree that the game was, I could not help but have some negative thoughts about the action as it was going on. Maybe I am just a paranoid person when it comes to entertainment products.

The amount of HRs hit in 2017 went up a substantial amount and the changes made to the MLB baseballs has been the most popular theory for why the HRs are up. Some pitchers think it's why blisters on their hands are up as well.

Combine the baseballs being, to sound extreme, "juiced," along with all of the shenanigans I saw unfold this season via outside forces controlling game outcomes ala instant replay and umpire snafus, as I watched the back…

Movie Collection: The Blob (1988)

The Blob released in 1988 is a remake of a 1958 movie with the same title that starred Steve McQueen.  However, the 1988 version comes chock-full of 80s movie making goodness.

A blob of goo from outerspace crashes to Earth and begins sucking people into it, dissolving/ eating them?

The only thing I recalled about The Blob from watching it as a kid was a scene involving someone stuck in the creature and someone else trying to pull them out, only to yank their arm off.  As an adult revisiting the movie, I knew right away I was going to like it as they revealed actor Kevin Dillon's character.  Dillon is the motorcycle riding "bad boy" and has the long, glorious 80s hair to go with his attitude.  As an adult I am used to Kevin Dillon with shorter hair and being from the show Entourage. And, I'm not going to say his Blob hair is a wig, maybe it's not, either way, it's awesome hair or an awesome wig.

Shawnee Smith stars in the heroine role and by the end she goes i…

Darkchylde CGC Comic Duo

At one point I was going to piece together a Darkchylde collection, but I had such issues getting the books to arrive thru the mail in good condition (Darchylde cases were cursed to get broken in transit) that I moved on to something else. However, here are a couple of Darkchylde CGC graded books I have sitting in my possesion currently.

The weirdness with the second one is it had a broken piece of plastic loose inside of the case (I don't see holes in the outside of the case), hung up and visible in the space above the book. It has vanished and I can't figure out where it went!

Bald(ing) Under The Baseball Cap

The fact that I had thinning hair came to my attention at some point during high school.  It may have been near the tail end of it or right after it.  My grandmother made the comment "he has thin hair just like J.W. did when he was young." J.W. being my bald grandpa.

Before that in school people did not make fun of my head for balding, they just stated it was a funny shape.  So, great, a funny shape AND balding head?!

It did not weigh on me or worry me and I went into my twenties less focused on balding and more focused on my hair style transition from someone who grew up parting their hair every day to embracing life with no part in the hair.  A girl I dated advised me to lose the "old grandpa" part and she helped me make it more of a messy, let it fall as it may style.  This worked great for me, no time wasted combing my hair!

As a manager at a fast food place I eventually got to where I would semi-comb my hair due to managers did not wear hats.  I met a new girl…

Baseball Rookie Card Vs Prospect Card

When I was growing up the Rookie Card meant something special. There were minor league cards, but they were considered an inferior product. These days a players first Bowman card seems to be the sought after card and prospect cards hold more importance to many than a RC.

I can't change my mindset from when I was a kid. I still prefer a nice RC. :)

Blaster Break: 2015 Panini Contenders Baseball

A blaster box from a Target store discount section. At $14.99 I figured why not see what the two autographs inside of the box would be.

2015 Panini Contenders Baseball, 42 cards per blaster, two autographs per blaster. They are sticker autos as ye shall see. I'll check the base cards later and if something amazing was overlooked I'll post some of that, but otherwise, here's just the two autograph hits

Brandon Lowe & Jake Woodford

Video Game Collection: Destiny 2

Destiny 2 out of the box felt like a better initial experience than what I had with Destiny. The story campaign and missions were somewhat more fun, with the environment of the sixth level specifically being memorable to me because of the crawling through dark air ducts and such started to make me feel like I was in an Alien movie. Well, the truth be told, it made me wish I was playing a new Dead Space game instead.

The gameplay is a fun burst of what I would call  "arcade" shooter in terms of quick paced blasting. Overall, it is mindless to me, which can be a good thing, but doesn't have long term attention holding power. Most of the game is really just too easy.

The more difficult aspects of the game are generally designed to be tackled with a team of other players and I don't know enough people online to ever have fun with those modes and events. If you're a lone wolf game player you're going to feel left out on chunks of what Destiny 2 has to offer.

Movie Collection: L.A. Confidential

L.A. Confidential is a 1997 crime movie set in '50s Hollywood. Directed by Curtis Hanson, who took screenplay credit along with Brian Helgeland, the movie's roots grow from the novel of the same name authored by James Ellroy.

The movie was nominated for 9 Oscars and won two: Kim Basinger for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and then Best Screenplay based on previously produced or published material for Hegeland and Hanson

L.A. Confidential for me is a movie that still holds up enough that I give it a four out of five stars on my Vudu digital movie watching app. If you've seen the movie several times, subsequent viewings may be more of a slow burn experience, but the punctuation marks of action and drama are all in the right spots to enjoy the payoff.

This is one of the rare movies that I can call "convoluted," and yet also say that they pulled it off in a satisfactory manner; all of the many parts connect in such a way that I found it worthy entertainment and bef…

Madison Bumgarner & Tim Hudson 2016 Chrome Printing Plate 1/1

This is the first baseball card that I have purchased in a while. I was drawn to it because the 2016 Topps Chrome Madison Bumgarner baseball card features a picture that says a lot in terms of story value to me. The card not only features Madison Bumgarner posing with a smile, but at his side is Tim Hudson.

2016 Topps Chrome #39 Madison Bumgarner 1 of 1 printing plate for the color Yellow

Tim Hudson's MLB career lasted for 17 seasons going from the Athletics, to the Braves, and then the Giants, with the first year of his two year contract in San Francisco seeing him earn his first ever World Series ring.

San Fran Giants pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Tim Hudson became good friends when they became teammates and in 2014 when the Giants were heading into the playoffs making Tim Hudson a World Series champion was stated to be on Bumgarner's list of priorities.

The series that year went all the way to game seven, which Tim Hudson started, making him the oldest pitcher in MLB histo…

Hunter Pence Races Denard Span Home

A picture from NBcCsn bay area Giants news. Iw atched the game and it was quite a funny moment where Span waited to see if a ball was going to get caught, Pence did not, and then they came really close together as they ran home. Posting this because I needed a link to use the pic on a blog posting elsewhere and Photobucket just doesn't work anymore. :P

Clive Barker's Nightbreed #1

Nightbreed is a CLive Barker movie that I enjoyed when I was younger. In the not too distant past they put together a new version of the movie with footage that had been edited out ala more of a director's cut. The old footage returned to the movie really did make a big difference in my opinion, for sure making the ending a better for me. It's an interesting movie to check out.

It's also a comic book series! Clive Barker's material has translated into comic books for some of his other tales as well; Hellraiser and such. Any way, here is a look at a Nightbreed Issue #1 that I currently have in my possession.

Topps Demands 600 HRs

Topps on demand is putting up a set of cards for sale this week that focuses on the 600 HR Club in baseball. I like the premise and yet the execution here is odd to me because their set features who are nowhere near 600 hrs such as:Cody Bellinger, Carlos Correa, etc.

I guess if you want to have fun with a crystal ball type of card and the players do reach 600 Hrs in their career then these make sense. However, there's a good chance they end up as silly as the ole Leaf Heading to the Hall set from the 90s that had the likes of Don Mattingly as a shoo-in. Okay, maybe Mattingly gets in one day as a manager or voted in by veteran committee of pity or something.

Here's the checklist for the 2017 Topps On Demand 600 Home Run Club

1-6 — Albert Pujols Career-defining Home Runs
7 — Hank Aaron (600 Home Run Club)
8 — Alex Rodriguez (600 Home Run Club)
9 — Jim Thome (600 Home Run Club)
10 — Giancarlo Stanton (Chasing 600)

NamWolf Comic Issues 1-3 with Variants

I've posted about the comic 'Namwolf  before. I have issues #1-3 with the variants. Here's a somewhat dark photo of what those look like. They are in order from left to right 1,2,3, with regular covers on top and variants on the bottom.

Ding-Dong PTC Websites Are Dead For Paypal

Paid To Click websites have been decent casual earning websites for getting extra baseball card collection dough each month in my experience. But, that extra ten spot from such sites here and there has been brought to an end by Paypal for me.

I used to use a website called Clixsense, but they quit paying out via Paypal.  I moved on to Neobux and today, after reaching my payout, I clicked to be paid, and instead was directed to a message from them stating they could no longer pay folks via Paypal. They say Paypal will not let any PTC websites use their services anymore.

I am not looking to open a new payment processing account on some other website, one can only stomach having to use so many different accounts and different websites for every little thing in online life, yeesh.  Therefore, no more PTC websites for this fellow to generate spare card collecting moolah.

GWENT: The Witcher Card Video Game Beta review/ early impressions

After playing the video game GWENT, based on the card game from within the Witcher video game series,  for an extended period of time, I can sum it up in a brief review.

The game involves grinding to unlock cards or just buying them. Then you play them, but most strategy just goes out the window because once you have your "powerful" cards and do well with them you'll rank up to be facing people with access to the same cards. Depending on the faction deck a player chooses to use, there are really a bare minimum of strategies being deployed and one can guess exactly what their opponet is going to do before even the first card is laid out. Players will just play what they have seen others win with etc and therefore the game becomes a dull cycle of pointlessness.

The early stages of first playing were fun, trying to win with whatever you had against whatever the other player had. There was some adventure there. But, as you progress into the game that illusion goes away. I…

GWENT The Witcher Card Video Game Fun

There is a card game that they play within the realms of The Witcher video game and now that game has it's own standalone game: GWENT: The Witcher Card Game.

This game is in different stages of Beta on PC, Xbox, and PS4. I've played it on my PC and PS4 and have been having a lot of fun. I am not someone that ever got into card games like Magic The Gathering, but I was able to pick up Gwent and have fun fairly quick out of the gate.

(I will point out that I play PC more because my television right now is a plasma and the borders of the cards threaten to burn into the screen being stationary as they are for as long as they are)

If you can access it: the game is free! They sell you kegs and such to pull new cards from, but you can also earn free kegs throughout playing.

The different cards have animation, sound effects, and voices that sound off when played, which brings some life to the action for sure. The variety of cards to be unlocked make this something a card collector mig…

Book Spotlight: The Monster Game By Wes Laurie

If you liked 50 Shades of Grey OR if you hated 50 Shades of Grey: The Monster Game by Wes Laurie might be for you!

A man falls for a woman who introduces him to an erotic role playing game based off of classic monster movies. However, as he falls in love, so too does he fall into danger with the escalating challenges of the game.

Amazon reader review: "This book was titillating. I never could get into 50 shades because I don't like the meek submissive female character that frankly plagues the genre of erotic fiction. This is not that. This is a powerful woman told from a male perspective. It was a delight to read, with a surprise ending that made me howl with delight."

Funny Snapshot From Bryce Harper vs Hunter Strickland: Nats vs Giants "Fight"

Denard Span In A Flock Of Seagulls

This is what it looks like at the San Francisco Giants ballpark when it goes into extra innings. Playing on the seagulls time now!

And what is really great is Denard Span has a confessed fear of fish and BIRDS.

By the way, bases loaded in the top of the 16th resulted in zero runs, this game is going into the 17th as I type this.

Frank Thomas 1990 Leaf RC PSA Gem Mint 10

When I was a kid Frank Thomas was my favorite baseball player; along with Kent Hrbek, Kirby Puckett, Cal Ripken Jr., and Nolan Ryan. Did I leave any out? I might have left some out.

When I returned to baseball card collecting as an adult. I quickly stocked up on PSA Gem Mint 10 Frank Thomas rookie cards and a Gem Mint 10 Frank Thomas 1993 Finest Refractor.

I eventully sold those to pay for a trip I had to take.

Recently I was feeling nostalgic and picked up a new 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas RC off of Ebay.

Now that I have this card again, I like the card, but really, just don't care about PSA anymore. I don't like their holders at all. This one has some minor scuffs on it, but it's not even that, it's just that, they just don't do it for me.

I'm going to start some baseball card collecting projects, quite possibly with some Frank Thomas cards, quite possibly 1990 Leaf RC cards being involved, but this specific one I'm going to go give someone a deal on it and re…

The Dirty Soles Of Barefoot Wilma Flintstone & Betty Rubble

Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble are always running around barefoot, but that doesn't mean that when they prop their dirty bare feet up that they aren't still stone age glamourous!

Here are a couple of autographed 5x7 art prints I have from artist Scott Blair. The colors on these really POP nice and bright in person.

Plastic #1 Serial Killer Love Comic Book with Variants

Here is a trio of covers I picked up for the first issue of the comic book PLASTIC.

This one looks like it will be a fun one to collect. The regular cover is the first one starting from the left.

Plastic #1 description:

"Retired serial killer Edwyn Stoffgruppen is in love with Virginia, a girl he "met online." Her affection quiets his vile urges. Together, they tour the back roads of America in their LTD, eating doughnuts and enjoying their healthy appetites for each other. Life is good...until a Louisiana billionaire kidnaps Virginia, forcing Edwyn to kill again in exchange for her freedom.

Oh, and did we mention that Virginia is a sex doll?

Bag Break: Himalayan Pink Salt Lentil Chips From The Daily Crave

I opened and ate from a bag of The Daily Crave Breaking News Himalayan Pink Salt Lentil Chips.

Very salty.

At first taste these made me think of pork rinds, but after you've had a few the taste then transitions to being more like an extra salty Bugle corn snack taste. So, there you have it, pork rinds meets Bugles.

Alien Day 2017

Apparently today is ALIEN DAY. As in the movie franchise Alien. Why this is, I do not know.

I decided that to mark the occassion I would open a free pack of Alien Anthology digital cards from Upper Deck e-pack. And by cards I really mean card, there's only one card in the free pack.

Here is the card I pulled:

The Alien Anthology cards are pretty boring in my opinion.

Christian Arroyo Made His Giants and Topps NOW MLB Debut!!

The San Francisco Giants were looking for a spark of energy for their lineup going into a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and one move they made was calling up their top prospect Christian Arroyo.

This picture is what Arroyo at this exact moment uses as his Twitter profile pic:

Christian Arroyo is a SS by trade, but has been getting work at other positions and made his MLB debut at 3rd base. He went hitless on the night, but did move a runner over to third that eventually scored, as well as made some nice plays in the field. Specifically, he made a barehand play on a ball that careened off of pitcher Matt Cain. Cain was knocked to the ground after being hit by the ball, and Arroyo scooped it up, threw out the runner, and then followed through with his momentum taking him toward the mound by then helping Matt Cain back up to his feet.

If you're holding Christian Arroyo baseball cards be prepared for an uptick in value right now, the window seems…

Superhero Discussion: Cloak

I pulled this card of the Marvel character CLOAK from an Upper Deck e-pack of 2016 Marvel Annual Digital Trading cards.

As someone NOT at all schooled on superheros and their origins, the name made me chuckle. Cloak? Who pitched that one in the creative idea room?  Of course, while I might have amused myself with my lack of knowledge on the character, if you go and read about him on the Marvel Universe Wiki his superhero story is fairly interesting with Cloak seeming to be a play on Cloak and Dagger. Marvel WIKI LINK IS THESE BIG WORDS

If my only impression of Cloak was from this Marvel Annual trading card, however, I might continue to think he's as lame as my first impression dictated he was as a character. The back of the card reads: "Cloak lands in detention for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the other hand, this rare occurrence ends up sparing Cloak from fighting his classmates to the death for the rest of high school."

The picture on the front looks …

The Good and the Bad: Party Of Five Season 1

Netflix added the 90s drama Party Of Five to the service and I just finished watching the first season. Here are my quick "good and bad" things of Party of Five Season 1:

Lacey Chabert ala Claudia Salinger does a great job as a child actor. She brought most of the humor that there was for the first season, but doesn't waver in performance during dramatic moments either.

Neve Campbell as Julia Salinger has great on-screen presence as an actor as well. I'm not sure if she seems like a 15 year old, but in general her acting is pretty solid.

The family dog is cute.

The music is good! It was great to come into a scene with Bailey rocking out and hear it be the song I Alone from the band Live playing. Usage of the R.E.M. song Strange Currencies was good too.

The entire show has a strong "after school special" vibe going for it with the life lessons being explored in the plots. It becomes fairly predictable sometimes due to this. The acting performances a…

Re-Animator Trading Cards From Fright Rags

This news seemed quirky enough to make a blog post about.

Over at FRIGHT RAGS they are selling boxes and single packs of Re-Animator trading cards.

Check out their site to see the cards and the sketch card artists who made sketches for the product, and other information, like, you might pull a Barbara Crampton autograph.

Re-Animator is a 1985 horror movie directed by Stuart Gordon about (synopsis from IMDB) "A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus."

Holy cow, they sell MADBALLS t-shirts too!

Red Thorn: Glascow Kiss Attempted Read

I picked up a copy of RED THORN: GLASCOW KISS which is a book that collects the first seven Red Thorn comics into one volume.

It is a cool looking book, cool art. The story is very creative and has enough intrigue that I thought I'd get "into it." But, alas, I never finished reading this book, found myself sometimes confused and overall having a hard time keeping my attention on it. If you've been specifically looking for something that delves into some Scottish myth territory, however, I'm guessing you'd have strong interest in the premise of Red Thorn.

"On the rain-soaked streets of Glasgow, a girl whose drawings somehow come to life has just stumbled across her one true love. And thousands of miles below those streets, an ancient demi-god plots his escape from the prison where he’s been held for nearly two thousand years. Evil forces are at play and no one is safe as the legends of Scottish mythology collide with the modern world."

Box Break: Bacon & Cheddar Cheez-It Crackers

I've been trying all sorts of Cheez-It crackers, but still have not found a flavor that defeats the Extra Toasty style ones.

The latest box of Cheez-It crackers I opened was the Bacon & Cheddar flavored ones.

These crackers work as a mindless snack I guess, but at no point did I personally taste bacon. Even looking at the picture of bacon on the box and using my vivid imagination I failed to associate the taste of these crackers with actual bacon. The flavoring taste maybe like synthetic bacon bits, but I'm not sure if that is accurate because I have not eaten bacon bits in a very, very long time.

The fake bacon, or whatever, flavoring sort of kills the cheddar flavor off too. So, I personally did not enjoy Cheez-It Bacon & Cheddar crackers and was confused by the flavoring. If you are a real fan of bacon flavor, I don't think these crackers really have what you crave.

2016 Marvel Annual Comes To Upper Deck e-pack Digital Cards Store

Fans of Marvel trading cards may rejoice, or complain, depending on their thoughts involving 2016 Marvel Annual trading cards. (It's 2017, yo!) This trading card series is now available to be opened through Upper Deck's digital trading card e-pack system.

You can buy digital packs, boxes, or even cases, and look for sketch cards and such that can be turned physical ala mailed to you.

2016 Marvel Annual trading cards are also avialable via the "Free Pack Of The Day" in the e-pack store, which can net you a single card each day if you like. I've personally been opening a pack of Upper Deck Dinosaurs each day, but today I gave the Marvel Annual pack a whirl. My first 2016 Marvel Annual digital card pulled is of Dazzler.

Savage Things #1 and #2

Here's a comic book series I picked up the first couple of issues on. I plan to read it, but it's easy to collect a stack of comic books and before you know it you've got more books than you have reading time.

Savage Things comic issue #1 and issue #1. Info about the series is below the photo.

Twenty-five years ago, a secret government organization kidnapped children and trained them to be chaos agents who went on to foment unrest and execute enemies of the state around the world. When these cold and unfeeling creations proved too difficult to control, the powers that be exterminated their kill squad with extreme prejudice. Too bad it didn’t work. Now a rogue band of the worst monsters the world has ever known is cutting a swath of terror across the United States, threatening not just a disruption of the peace but to expose secrets their handlers never wanted to come to light. The only way to stop them is to call back the only man who ever walked away from them. His code n…

Zombie Tramp Easter Special 2017

I censored the photos. These are a couple of Zombie Tramp Risque Easter variants I got. I'm not pleased with Midtown comics for the condition the bunny one came in (via mail), appears to have been folded at some point.

Zombie Tramp has some fun art. I opened the book to see what the story was like. There was an Easter egg hunt going on with the eggs all being hidden inside the fat folds of a hefty lady, so, that's the type of humor one should expect. 😜

This Easter special has a third cover option as well that I saw, but I didn't need to make it a Zombie Tramp Threesome. So, there's three covers, and then three Risque variants of the same covers with the naughty parts on display.

Dark Souls Tales Of Ember #1 With Variants

As of this posting I have never actually played any of the Dark Souls video games. However, I thought the latest comic book based in the world of those video games looked really cool; judging a book by its cover.

The following are what appears in the pictures, though not in the right order, the regular cover is in the second picture with the lady thing and purple sky.
